When you discover Doubtful Sound you will be struck by its silence – a silence broken only by birdsong or the rushing of a distant waterfall. The beauty and isolation of Doubtful Sound are so compelling that it’s difficult to believe you were in civilisation just a few hours earlier. A day excursion into this pristine fiord begins with a cruise across beautiful Lake Manapouri to West Arm. You will then board a coach and travel the sub-alpine road over Wilmot Pass, pausing along the way to experience the dense Fiordland rainforest and view Doubtful Sound glistening far below. On arrival in Doubtful Sound, board our spacious catamaran Patea Explorer for a three-hour cruise through some of the fiord’s most stunning scenery. Throughout the cruise, a specialist nature guide provides commentary, answers questions and points out highlights. Wildlife sightings are common in Doubtful Sound. Fur seals bask on rocky outcrops and the fiord’s resident pod of bottlenose dolphins are often seen in the deep waters.  The trip also includes a picnic lunch.
2. Milford Sound Coach/Cruise/Fly
Milford Sound is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is a fiord of spectacular beauty and natural grandeur, carved by ancient glaciers. The deep, icy blue waterway flows to the Tasman Sea and is set amongst the towering peaks of the majestic Fiordland National Park. Milford Sound is a 'must see' for any sightseeing visitor to New Zealand. As well as a flight into or out of Milford, a cruise on the Sound is a great way to discover and experience the many sights on offer. The fly-in, fly-out helihike combines the excitement of walking on the Fox Glacier with the thrill of a helicopter flight. By flying in, guests are able to access and explore a part of the glacier where its forces work hardest and often create spectacular ice caves and arches. Equipped with sturdy leather boots and other equipment, they board the helicopter for their first flight over the pinnacles of the lower icefall. They then circle the upper icefall and Victoria Falls before landing. The landing site on the ice is a remote and exceptionally beautiful part of the glacier. At this stage, their guide outfits them with crampons, specially designed for these ice conditions and they follow the ice steps cut by their guide as they explore the amazing formations and ice caves which are only seen here. Each departure is a true voyage of exploration. There are so many changing features that the guides always find something new. Weather permitting; ice time is about 2.5 hours.
