Golf in Asia
With modern facilities, internationally designed golf courses,
and an excellent infrastructure, the availability of golf has developed significantly
in Thailand. This has been evidenced by the World
Golf Travel Agents Association recently awarding Thailand the
'Best up and coming destination' for golf vacations.
Thailand has hosted world class golf tournaments attracting such players as
Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, and Colin Montgomerie to name but a few. Such courses as
Blue Canyon in Phuket have played host to international tournaments together
with Thai Country Club and Alpine Golf Club in Bangkok during the last few
years. Thai Country Club will in fact host the high profile Asian Volvo Masters
for the next 3 years.
There are 25 golf courses operating in the country, with more than 65
projects at some stage of development, planning, and construction. Among the
existing golf courses, there are five 36-hole courses such as Vietnam Country
Club, Long Thanh Golf Club and Song Be Golf Club in Ho Chi Minh City and King's
Island Golf Club, Chi Linh Star Golf & Country Club in the Hanoi, twelve
18-hole courses including the exclusive Van Tri Golf Club and Tam Dao Golf Club,
and three 9-hole courses, all around Saigon.
Lately several new golf destinations have sprung up across Vietnam. Hanoi now
boasts 4 championship courses in North Vietnam. Danang, the site of the famous
China Beach and home to Vietnam’s best seaside resorts also houses the 2 best
Vietnam golf courses, Montgomerie Links Vietnam and Danang Golf Club. Further
south, the old French colonial mountain retreat of Dalat with its old world
colonial-styled charm boasts the unique Dalat Palace Golf Club - the only course
in Asia to feature bent grass tee boxes, fairways and greens. Finally, the
southern seaside resorts of Phan Thiet and Vung Tau also boast two and one top
resort golf course, respectively. Obviously, the Vietnam golfing choices are as
varied as can be found in any country. *
